Dr Mei Tan is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon and medical retina subspecialist with over a decade of experience in ophthalmology. She has expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the vitreous and retina, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, central serous chorioretinopathy, degenerative myopia, inflammatory retinopathies and inherited retinal diseases. She is a highly skilled vitreoretinal surgeon, regularly performs complex vitreoretinal operations including all forms of macular surgery, diabetic vitrectomy and retinal detachment surgery. Dr Tan is also an experienced cataract surgeon and frequently combines cataract surgery with retinal operations.
Dr Tan completed ophthalmology training at the Oxford Eye Hospital in Oxford, UK. She underwent sub-specialty training in medical retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and two vitreo-retinal surgery fellowships at the Royal Perth Hospital and Lions Eye Institute, Perth and at Royal Adelaide Hospital. Following her subspecialty fellowships, she went on to gain valuable experience in ocular oncology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston. Dr Tan holds a PhD from the University College London for her work in translational research in gene therapy while working at the Institute of Ophthalmology, London and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. Dr Tan has consultant appointments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. She is an honorary clinical lecturer at the University of Melbourne and is involved the training of medical students and ophthalmology trainee doctors. Dr Tan maintains ongoing research in the field of retinal diseases and has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals. She is actively involved in several committees in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).
